As I approach my 50th year in life and 25 years in my career as a nurse, I realize the one thing that gives me direction in life: happiness.
If I am content and happy where I am living or working at a job, I know I am meant to be there. In my experience if things go wrong or do not work out easily, then I should avoid that path. I find that life will steer you toward the path you are meant to take.
Great example – I was living in an area where many people vacation. I had a beautiful apartment in a highly desired location, a very well paying job and had 4 days a week off every week. To the outsider, my life was enviable. In the beginning, I felt like the luckiest person ever. After a few years, though, I started to hate my job, hated the constant traffic and was feeling incredibly lonely. People would comment how they wished they could live where I lived and worked at the company where I worked, yet I wanted out.
I made the difficult decision to quit my job and move away to an area where the weather was not that great and neither was the job pay. The difference: I felt happy. For me, happiness is my main motivator in life.
